Fiberglass repair isn't the easiest thing in the world, but it can be done yourself. The trick is how long will it last?
The biggest mistake on repair would have to be cleanliness. If the area isn't cleaned properly, to insure there isn't any dust, or grease, it will not adhere properly to the surface you are trying to fix. Keeping that surface clean is essential.
There are many other factors to consider as well, such as smooth finishes and humidity. Humidity could affect the drying time of your applied topcoats.
The other thing that should be considered is cost. Fiberglass and gel coats are expensive! Fiberglass and gel coals can be finicky too. Sometimes you finish a project only to find that the gel coat didn't get out of bed on the right side that morning and it just doesn't want to dry, or bubbles up. As my dad has always said "you can't mess it up beyond my ability to repair it".
